On February 20, Pi Network's Open Network is scheduled to launch

In a word

  • On February 20, 2025, Pi Network will conclude its Enclosed Mainnet phase and begin its Open Network.

  • With 10.14 million Mainnet migrations and 19 million certified Pioneers, the network has surpassed its target of 10 million.

  • By removing firewalls, this change makes Pi's environment usable in the real world and permits communication with other systems that are compliant.

Pi Network's Open Network

According to Pi Network, its Open Network will formally start on February 20, 2025, at 8 AM UTC. With this, the network enters the Mainnet's Open Network phase.

With this launch, the Enclosed Mainnet era, which started in December 2021, comes to an end. The Mainnet was up and running throughout this time, but it was protected by a firewall.

In February, Pi's Open Network will debut

The Pi blockchain now has external connectivity thanks to the switch to the Open Network. The network will be able to communicate with other networks and systems that are compliant as a result. It will also enable Pioneers to carry out transactions outside of the Pi ecosystem.

"Pi—a cryptocurrency with real-world functions and applications backing it—is ready to open its utilities-driven ecosystem where our now over 19 million identity-verified Pioneers can use it," the release stated.

Notably, crucial development tasks like Know Your Customer (KYC) verification for Pioneers and the creation of fundamental features for the Pi ecosystem were made possible by the Enclosed Mainnet phase. In order to guarantee that the network will have working utilities by the time it was made available to the general public, developers were also given time to create actual apps.

According to the statement, critical requirements had to be met before the Open Network could debut. The first was finishing the required legal, business, product, and technical work.

19 million Pioneers confirmed their identities under the second requirement, exceeding the goal of 15 million. In addition, 10.14 million Pioneers moved to Mainnet, surpassing the initial target of 10 million.

More than 100 Mainnet or Mainnet-ready apps have also been released by the network. Finally, the third requirement states that there must be no delays in launch caused by outside circumstances.

Strong contributors within the Pi community will be given priority during the gradual transfer from the Testnet to the Mainnet.

Crypto exchange OKX confirmed after the announcement that it will list PI on the same day as the debut. The PI/USDT pair will be open for spot trading.

The initiative has drawn a lot of criticism in spite of the excitement. Previous mainnet launch delays, claims of pyramid-like architecture, and data privacy concerns have raised doubts about its legitimacy.

One user posted on X (previously Twitter) that "more than half of the Pi Community will be disappointed by Pi's open network because they are expecting unrealistic value."

Additionally, users have reported KYC verification difficulties.

"If my memory serves me correctly, I have been cultivating Pi from approximately 2020–2021, was steady, and occasionally halted. My KYC on Pi has been pending for more than a year, if not more. Another person said, "This is really sick."

The anti-scam website MASTR has also expressed disapproval of the proposal. Pi Network was declared a scam by the platform.

MASTR wrote, "PI Network will soon rug and has nothing to do with the real project."

Citing worries about Pi Network's intricate and unregulated business model, possible connections to multi-marketing scams, and lack of transparency, Vietnamese authorities had opened an inquiry into the company in 2023.
